TCU will look to bounce back from its first loss of the young season when it takes on Pepperdine on Wednesday in the SoCal Challenge in San Juan Capistrano, Calif.

The Horned Frogs (3-1) were waylaid 85-66 by Santa Clara in tournament play on Monday. Maxwell Evans led TCU with 15 points in the loss, with Mike Miles and Micah Peavy adding 10 points each. Miles was just 4 of 15 from the floor.

TCU fell behind early but pulled to within four points late in the first half before Santa Clara reeled off a 24-0 run bridging the end of the first half and the start of the second. The Horned Frogs trailed by as many 28 points and failed to get coach Jamie Dixon his 100th win at TCU.

TCU allowed Santa Clara to shoot 61.2 percent from the floor and hit 11 of its 16 shots from 3-point range and was outrebounded 39-24.

"We got outplayed in pretty much every facet," Dixon said afterward. "I'm a little surprised it happened. I'm really surprised about the rebounding. Everything we said we were going to do ... we didn't do."

Pepperdine (2-4) also lost its first game of this tourney, falling 70-63 to undefeated Fresno State despite shooting a season-best 54.5 percent from the floor, including a 9-for-15 showing on its 3-point shots.

Mike Mitchell Jr.'s 3-pointer with 34 seconds to play brought the Waves to within 65-63 before Fresno State iced the game with five free throws.

"We're a young team," Pepperdine guard Jade Smith said. "We need to work on playing at a consistent rate, being able to produce and being able to maintain our composure and all of that."

Jan Zidek paced Pepperdine with 20 points while Mitchell added 15. The Waves have lost two straight games and three of their past four.

The Waves won the only other game played between the teams, beating TCU 57-45 in 1945 in Oklahoma City.
